Chapter IX - Preventive conduct when overtaking and when giving priority

Preventive conduct when overtaking

The risk factors that influence the behaviour of the motor vehicle in motion are:

  • the travelling speed;
  • engaging in an overtaking without making sure;
  • the sudden overtaking of a motor vehicle and forcing the re-entry onto the travelling lane;
  • the wrong assessment of the speed of the motor vehicle coming from the opposite direction.

Preventive conduct measures for the driver who overtakes:

  • engaging in an overtaking is done only after the driver of the motor vehicle makes sure both from the front and from the back, he will engage in the overtaking only when he is sure that the manoeuvre can be performed in full safety;
  • to make sure that the one being overtaken has noticed his intention to overtake;
  • to correctly assess the travelling speed of the motor vehicle coming from the opposite direction;
  • to maintain a sufficient lateral distance from the overtaken motor vehicle.

Preventive conduct measures for the driver who is overtaken:

  • when a motor vehicle is about to be overtaken he must not increase the travelling speed and must move as close as possible to the right edge of the carriageway so as not to hinder in any way the one who has engaged in the overtaking;
  • to increase the attention and to anticipate possible situations that could become dangerous.

Preventive conduct measures for the driver coming from the opposite direction:

  • to reduce the travelling speed and to avoid a possible collision with a motor vehicle that did not correctly assess the travelling speed of the one coming from the opposite direction and has engaged in the overtaking;
  • to increase the attention and to avoid situations that could become dangerous.

Preventive conduct when giving priority

The risk factors that influence the behaviour of the motor vehicle in motion are:

  • giving priority to pedestrians;
  • not noticing the signs.

Preventive conduct measures when giving the priority of passage:

  • to warn in time the driver who travels at a short distance behind;
  • to increase the attention to the road signs and to give priority to pedestrians in any situation;
  • when he must stop for giving priority not to hinder the traffic of the other road users by forcing them to perform additional avoidance manoeuvres that can cause accidents.
