When the traffic is carried out on a road with two or more traffic lanes per direction, these lanes are used by the drivers of vehicles depending on the traffic intensity and the travelling speed, these having the obligation to return to the first lane whenever this is possible. In general, on any category of road, if the first lane (the one next to the curb) is free, you drive on it, regardless of the speed at which you travel. Therefore you can use the lane next to the axis of the road on a motorway when you perform overtaking of other motor vehicles if the other lanes in the driving direction are occupied or then when you want to drive with a speed higher than the motor vehicles on the other traffic lanes.
