Question 334 of 533

How must a wounded person who presents spinal column injuries be positioned in a means of transport?

A in a sitting position;
B horizontal, face up;
C the person must not be moved until the ambulance arrives.

Explanation

In the case where for the person involved in a traffic accident a spinal column fracture is suspected, mobilizing (moving) the victim will be avoided until the arrival of the medical team. If there is a potential danger (danger of burning, asphyxiation, etc.) and the victim must be mobilized, this will be done with the immobilization of the spinal column. The victim will be laid on a hard surface (door, board, stretcher) and secured with ties passed over the thighs, pelvis and chest.

Attention! Mobilizing the victim will be done only in case of emergency.

You may suspect that a person presents a spinal column injury if:

  • there are signs of cranial trauma;
  • during the trauma an exceptional force was exerted on the back or neck;
  • the victim complains of an intense pain of the neck or back;
  • the victim accuses weakness, numbness, paralysis or lack of control of the limbs, urinary bladder or stool;
  • the neck or back of the victim are twisted or have an abnormal position;
  • the person is unconscious and cannot describe the pain.

The correct answer is: C
