GENERAL Learning Environment Category B (B, B1)
Question 760 of 1208

What prohibition do the drivers of vehicles have when driving on roads covered with snow, ice or black ice?

A from driving on those road sections without authorization from the road administration;
B from driving a motor vehicle whose maximum authorized total mass is greater than 3.5 tonnes, without having chains or other certified anti-skid equipment mounted on the wheels;
C from performing overtaking.

Explanation

For answer  A

It is not mandatory to obtain an authorization to drive on road sections covered with snow, ice or black ice.

For answer  B

The driver of the motor vehicle is prohibited from driving the motor vehicle with the maximum authorized total mass greater than 3.5 tonnes on roads covered with snow, ice or black ice, without having chains or other certified anti-skid equipment mounted on the wheels, during the periods and on the roads established by order of the minister of transport, construction and tourism. These areas are generally signalled with the sign “Snow chains”.

The road traffic legislation sanctions driving the motor vehicle with a maximum authorized total mass greater than 3.5 tonnes on public roads covered with snow, ice or black ice, without winter tyres on the wheels of the drive axle/axles, or without chains or other certified anti-skid equipment mounted on the wheels of the drive axle/axles.
It is important to remember that this legal article leaves, as a choice, two options: either winter tyres on the wheels of the drive axle/axles, or chains or other certified anti-skid equipment applied on the summer tyres on the wheels of the drive axle/axles.
However, the sign “Snow chains” does not leave the option to choose between these two options, but obliges the fitting with snow chains, regardless of whether the tyres are summer or winter.

For answer  C

Overtaking is not prohibited when driving on road sections covered with snow, ice or black ice, but it is recommended to perform it with reduced speed, with increased prudence and to respect the maximum speed limit of 30 km/h in the urban area or 50 km/h outside the urban area, speed limits imposed by the road legislation for situations in which the carriageway is covered with black ice, ice, packed snow, slush or wet cobblestones.

The correct answer is: B
