GENERAL Learning Environment Category B (B, B1)
Question 1023 of 1208

You drive a motor vehicle powered with an engine with ignition by spark, equipped with a catalytic converter (antipollution device). What kind of gasoline must you use?

A only unleaded gasoline;
B only leaded gasoline with tetraethyl lead additive;
C any kind of gasoline with an octane rating over 90.

Explanation

For answer  A

When you drive a motor vehicle powered by an engine with ignition by spark, equipped with a catalytic converter (antipollution device), you must use only unleaded gasoline.

The catalytic converter reduces polluting emissions by transforming harmful gases into less harmful substances. The use of leaded gasoline can irreversibly damage the catalytic converter. Current pollution standards, such as Euro 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, require the use of such antipollution systems.

For answer  B

Gasoline with tetraethyl lead additive MUST NOT be used in engines with a catalytic converter, because it damages its components, cancelling its efficiency. See the explanation for answer A.

For answer  C

When you drive a motor vehicle powered by an engine with ignition by spark, equipped with a catalytic converter (antipollution device), you may use gasoline with different octane rating values, as long as these are unleaded.

The octane rating (OR) represents the resistance of a fuel to detonation and can be between 0 and 100. In Romania the most common gasoline types are with an octane rating of 95 or 98. Gasoline with OR 98, being more resistant to detonation, is recommended to be used in engines that have an increased compression ratio.

The correct answer is: A
