The fracture represents the break of a bone or of a cartilage of a limb of the body. Most frequently, these appear at limb level and the most prone to the occurrence of fractures are elderly people, due to the lower elasticity of the bones.

Fractures can be:

• closed (the skin remains intact);
• open (there is an open wound up to the level of the broken bone).

Recognition signs:

• spontaneous pain;
• deformation of the affected region (unnatural position);
• the appearance of a bruise;
• lack of transmission of movements through the affected bone.

First aid in case of a fracture:

• position the victim according to the fractured area to prevent the worsening of the injury;
• clean, disinfect and bandage the wound in case of an open fracture;
• temporarily immobilize the affected area using splints, ensuring the stability of the fractured bone;
• transport the victim to the hospital for specialized medical care.
