Road safety distance between motor vehicles on motorways and expressways

It is installed near large urban agglomerations, in areas with frequent fog or lacking visibility, near toll stations and near congested road junctions, at intervals of 500 m, over a sector length chosen according to traffic values and the accident history. This sign is completed by the marking “Guidance marking for keeping the safety distance on motorways and expressways”. The distance of 500 meters refers to the repetition of the sign, it does not refer to the distance that must be kept from the vehicle that moves in front of you, a distance that must be at least two markings that accompany this sign, and the distance between the two markings may be between 44 and 72 meters.

This sign has the purpose of improving road safety, by encouraging drivers to maintain an adequate distance from the motor vehicle in front. Besides the message “KEEP THE DISTANCE” together with the symbol of a car, on it are also inscribed two white arrows which refer to a “Guidance marking for keeping the safety distance on motorways and expressways” which is applied successively on the carriageway and which represents the minimum recommended distance between motor vehicles, suggesting that when the space between your motor vehicle and the one in front is equivalent to the distance between two such markings through arrows, this is an adequate one to prevent collisions. Thus, the sign serves as an important preventive measure, meant to reduce the risk of accidents on high‑speed roads.
