The drivers of motor vehicles and agricultural or forestry tractors and the persons who occupy places provided by construction with approved seat belts or safety devices must wear them during driving on public roads, regardless of whether they occupy the front or rear seats of the motor vehicle and regardless of whether they drive in the urban area or outside built-up area.
The drivers of motor vehicles having seats provided by construction with seat belts must inform the passengers about the legal obligation to wear them during driving on public roads.
Nevertheless, the road legislation provides certain exceptions from the obligation to wear the seat belt, among the exceptions are the persons who have a medical certificate in which the condition contraindicating the wearing of the seat belt must be mentioned.
The road legislation DOES NOT provide an exception from wearing the seat belt for elderly persons. Also, it DOES NOT provide an exception for children up to 12 years old either. In the case of transporting children in motor vehicles, the road legislation is very strict, for them there are special obligations that must be well understood.
For more information regarding the rules that must be respected when transporting children, access the Audio-Video lesson “Chapter 8 part 7 - Obligations and prohibitions regarding the transport of children” from step 1 on Școala Rutieră.
