The tourniquet is an elastic band, which is used to stop bleeding in cases of hemorrhages that cannot be stopped otherwise, usually in the case of limb wounds. It is applied above the wound, to reduce arterial pressure in the wound area. It is not applied directly to the skin but over a piece of bandage or other soft material, and a note is necessarily attached on which the victim's name and the exact time of applying the tourniquet are written. In the absence of a tourniquet, a scarf, belt, strap, tie, cord, elastic, etc. can be used.

Although in the past it was recommended to loosen the tourniquet every 15 minutes to allow blood supply to the limb, this practice is no longer recommended today, as it may worsen the victim's condition. Consult specialized personnel by calling 112 before performing this maneuver.

First aid in case of a hemorrhage:

• the victim will be positioned on their back, so that their head is lower than the level of the torso, this helping blood to irrigate the brain more easily;
• the type of hemorrhage will be determined.

Stopping the hemorrhage:

• in the case of venous hemorrhage, a sterile gauze compress will be applied to the wound, then a gauze on top and then fixed;
• in the case of arterial hemorrhage, the injured limb will be raised above the heart, then an arterial compression point will be sought;
• in the case of capillary hemorrhage, a compressive bandage will be applied.
