When the traffic takes place on a road with two or more lanes in the same direction, these lanes are used by the drivers of vehicles depending on the traffic intensity and the travelling speed, having the obligation to return to the first lane whenever this is possible. In general, on any category of road, if the first lane (the one next to the curb) is free, driving is done on it, regardless of the speed at which you travel. So you can use the lane next to the axis of the road on a motorway when performing overtaking of other motor vehicles if the other lanes in the direction of travel are occupied or when you want to drive at a higher speed than the motor vehicles on the other lanes of travel.
