Question 333 of 485

In a dressing, on the wound, is applied:

A a sterile cotton wool pad;
B a sterile gauze pad;
C any kind of pad.

Explanation

For answer  A

Cotton wool is very difficult to remove from the wound, therefore between the wound and the cotton wool a sterile gauze pad must be placed.

For answer  B

In a dressing, the first thing applied directly on the wound is the sterile gauze pad.

Performing the dressing:

  • a few sterile pads are applied over the wound, in such a way that the surface of the wound is completely covered;
  • over the sterile pads a not too thick layer of cotton wool is placed;
  • the wound is bandaged. A correct bandage must follow the following rules:
    • to be done with gentle movements, without causing pain;
    • to completely and evenly cover the wound and an area of about 15 cm around it;
    • to not have excessively many layers of bandage;
    • to not be too tight so as not to hinder the blood circulation in the respective area.

For answer  C

A sterile pad is needed. If we use any kind of pad there is the possibility for microbes, bacteria, etc. to enter the body.
