Question 229 of 533

The injured person with external hemorrhage must be placed:

A in such a way that the bleeding wound is lower than the level of the body;
B it does not matter whether the wound is situated higher or lower than the level of the body;
C in such a way that the bleeding wound is higher than the level of the body.

Explanation

The injured person with external hemorrhage must be placed in such a way that the bleeding wound is higher than the level of the body, so that the arterial pressure in the hemorrhage area decreases.

Hemorrhage is the abundant leakage of blood, internal or external, following the tearing or cutting of the wall of a blood vessel. This is caused by the damage of the vessel’s integrity, produced by trauma, purulent lysis of the vascular wall, or disturbance of blood chemistry.

Hemorrhages are of two types:

  • External hemorrhages. In which the blood leaks outside the body due to the sectioning of some blood vessels.
  • Internal hemorrhages. In which the blood that flows remains inside the body (e.g.: in the abdominal cavity).

Depending on the amount of blood lost, we can distinguish:

  • Large hemorrhages, fatal, when more than half of the total amount of blood is lost;
  • Medium hemorrhages, when 1/3 of the total amount of blood is lost;
  • Small hemorrhages, when an amount of 500-600 ml of blood is lost.

The correct answer is: C
