Question 352 of 533

In a dressing, on the wound, is applied:

A a sterile cotton wool pad;
B a sterile gauze pad;
C any pad.

Explanation

For answer  A

Cotton wool is very difficult to remove from the wound, therefore between the wound and the cotton wool must be placed a sterile gauze pad.

For answer  B

In a dressing, the first thing that is applied directly on the wound is the sterile gauze pad.

Performing the dressing:

  • apply over the wound a few sterile pads, in such a way that the surface of the wound is completely covered;
  • over the sterile pads place a not too thick layer of cotton wool;
  • bandage the wound. A correct bandage must respect the following rules:
    • to be made with gentle movements, without causing pain;
    • to cover entirely and uniformly the wound and an area of about 15 cm around it;
    • to not have excessively many layers of bandage;
    • to not be too tight so as not to hinder the blood circulation in the respective area.

For answer  C

A sterile pad is needed. If we use any pad there is the possibility that microbes, bacteria, etc., may enter the body.
