The first step carried out in treating wounds with bleeding is stopping the bleeding to prevent additional blood loss and to stabilize the condition of the victim. Only after the bleeding has been controlled and the area is stabilized can the next stage be carried out, which involves disinfecting the wound and applying a dressing.
Stopping the bleeding is done by tightly tying the arm by applying a tourniquet above the wound. The tourniquet is an elastic cord used for stopping bleeding in cases of hemorrhages that cannot be otherwise stopped, usually in limb wounds. It is not applied directly to the skin but over a piece of bandage or other soft material, and a note must be attached indicating the victim’s name and the exact time the tourniquet was applied. In the absence of a tourniquet, one can use: a scarf, belt, belt strap, tie, cord, elastic, etc.
Although in the past it was recommended to loosen the tourniquet every 15 minutes to allow blood supply to the limb, the practice is no longer recommended today because it can worsen the victim’s condition. Consult specialized personnel by calling 112 before performing this maneuver.
