The road legislation prohibits stopping the engine or bringing the gear lever into neutral while driving. Instead, it is recommended that when descending the slopes the engine brake be used, meaning introducing the gear lever into a gear, generally lower than the gear necessary at that moment. Thus you will not overstrain the service brake (the foot brake). The prolonged use of the service brake leads to the overheating of the discs and of the brake pads, a fact which also leads to the excessive heating of the brake fluid. If the brake fluid reaches the boiling point, air bubbles will appear in the fluid and the braking force will decrease very much.
Driving with large play at the clutch pedal suggests that the failure has already appeared, and the cause may even be waiting at the traffic light having the clutch pedal pressed.
Driving with large play at the steering mechanism is prohibited by the road legislation. Not respecting this prohibition is considered contravention.
If the clutch pedal is kept pressed when it is not necessary, the pressure springs which push the pressure plate on the clutch disc will be kept under tension uselessly in that period of time. In time, this leads to the weakening of the compression springs and the clutch will begin to slip, meaning it will fail. Therefore, the wrong habit of the car driver, which determines frequently the failure of the clutch, is resting the foot on the clutch pedal while the motor vehicle is moving or waiting at the traffic light having the clutch pedal pressed.
