Question 34 of 1208

The nasal hemorrhage can be stopped if the casualty:

A lies down with the head tilted back;
B stands and squeezes both nostrils for about 5-10 minutes;
C raises the right hand.

Explanation

The nasal hemorrhage can be stopped if the victim adopts a standing or sitting position, staying as calm as possible, with the head bent forward, to allow the blood to drain outward. It is necessary to apply pressure on the soft parts of the nose (squeezing both nostrils) between the thumb and index finger, for about 5-10 minutes. This method prevents the blood from flowing into the pharynx and contributes to stopping the bleeding.

Attention! The position frequently adopted by victims, lying on their back, face up and sometimes with the left hand raised, is wrong, ineffective and without scientific basis. If the victim feels that they may faint or their general condition worsens, they can be laid down, but face down, maintaining digital compression at the level of the nose. Also, if they have cotton at hand, they can make a small nasal tampon to insert into the nose before performing the compression.

The correct answer is: B
