Immobilizing a fracture (for example of the hands and feet) is done by fixing with splints two joints adjacent to the fracture, above and below the fracture site. Under the splint, a soft gauze bandage (or cotton) is applied to prevent injury to the soft tissues. In the event that no splints are available, immobilization can be done with scarves or triangular cloths. The fractured bone is placed on the piece of cloth, as straight as possible, and the corners of the material are knotted so that it can be suspended. For example, the forearm is placed on the piece of cloth and the knotted corners are passed around the neck to support the hand in a horizontal position.
A sheet of plastic material generally does not have good resistance, can be too elastic, will not let the skin breathe and perspiration may occur.
SPLINT, splints, = Piece (of wood, cardboard or metal) used to temporarily immobilize fractured limbs. Therefore, by using rigid cardboard you would be making a splint, and the question refers to the situation in which splints are not used.
