Question 671 of 1208

How must the driver of motor vehicle / agricultural or forestry tractor proceed before engaging in an overtaking?

A The driver signals and gets as close as possible to the axis of the road to ensure visibility over the traffic coming from the opposite direction;
B The driver warns by acoustic or optical signals the driver of the vehicle that is to be overtaken;
C The driver makes sure that the maneuver can be performed in safety conditions, after which signals the intention to change the direction of travel.

Explanation

For answer  A

Before engaging in an overtaking, at first, you must NOT signal and get as close as possible to the axis of the road, because first you must make sure that the vehicle in front and the one behind have not signalled the beginning of a similar maneuver. And in the event that another vehicle has engaged in overtaking you, you can no longer engage in overtaking, in which case you must not increase the travel speed and must drive as close as possible to the right edge of the carriageway or of the lane on which you are driving.

For answer  B

Before engaging in an overtaking you must NOT warn by acoustic or optical signals the driver of the vehicle that is to be overtaken.

For answer  C

When you want to perform the overtaking maneuver, you have the following obligations:

  • to make sure that the vehicle in front and the one behind have not signalled the beginning of a similar maneuver and that you can overtake without endangering or without hindering the traffic coming from the opposite direction;
  • to signal the intention to perform the maneuver;
  • to keep during the overtaking a sufficient lateral distance from the overtaken vehicle;
  • to re-enter the initial row of vehicles after you have signalled and have made sure that you can perform the maneuver in safety conditions for the overtaken vehicle and for the other road users.

Therefore, before engaging in an overtaking, the driver of motor vehicle/ the agricultural or forestry tractor must make sure that the maneuver can be performed in safety conditions, after which signals the intention to change the direction of travel.
