Road Code - Right of way granted through signs

RIGHT OF WAY

The right of way is divided into two categories:

  • Right of way granted through signs:
- the priority of the priority road;
- the priority of the narrowed road;
- the priority of the road with roundabout.
  •     Right of way granted by law:
- the right of way from the right;
- the right of way on slope;
- the special priority.

Right of way granted through signs

The right of way granted through signs is when certain signs are established, which, if we encounter them, we have the right of way, and other signs, which, if we encounter them, we do not have the right of way.

1. THE PRIORITY OF THE PRIORITY ROAD.

This type of priority is granted through regulatory priority signs, the vehicles that encounter them have or lose priority, depending on the signs encountered.

The signs that grant the right of way to those who encounter them are:

  • "Priority road", this sign is installed at the beginning of the priority road or before the intersections with a non-priority road and has the role of informing the driver that he has priority in the intersection in which he will enter (art. 129 paragraph 1 of the Regulation). The roads that intersect the priority road will have installed one of the signs "Stop" or "Give way".

* When the priority road changes its direction of travel in an intersection, it is mandatory to confirm the priority road by installing under each sign, both under the priority ones and under the priority-giving ones, additional panels that show the direction of the priority road.

  • "Intersection with a non-priority road", this sign is installed outside the urban area, on priority roads, at 100-200 m from the intersection with a non-priority road and has the role of confirming the priority of the one who encounters this sign.

2. THE PRIORITY OF THE NARROWED ROAD.

It applies on the narrowed road sectors, where two vehicles cannot pass one another, regardless of the nature of the narrowing, whether it is permanent (for example on bridges) or temporary (for example in the road works area). The regulation is made by installing at the ends of the narrowed road sector the signs: “Priority over oncoming traffic” and “Priority for oncoming traffic”.

  • "Priority over oncoming traffic", when encountering this sign, the driver of the motor vehicle has priority over all motor vehicles moving from the opposite direction (art. 129 paragraph 1 of the Regulation).

  • "Priority for oncoming traffic", when encountering this sign, the driver of the motor vehicle loses priority over all motor vehicles moving from the opposite direction.

priority for oncoming traffic

* If under the sign “Priority for oncoming traffic” we encounter the additional panel “Category of motor vehicles that must respect the meaning of the sign” and the vehicle we are driving does not belong to that category, we are not obliged to give the right of way.

3. THE PRIORITY OF THE ROAD WITH ROUNDABOUT.

In the intersections with roundabout, signalled as such, the vehicles that move inside them have priority over those that are about to enter the intersection (art. 57 paragraph 4 of the OUG).
