General information regarding the theoretical exam (the hall) and the practical exam (the route)

In order to be able to take the theoretical exam (the hall) for the first time you must arrive at the counter to register your file for the examination.

To reach the counter where the file will be registered for the examination there are two possibilities:

  • you go directly to the headquarters of the SPCRPCIV in your county and take a queue ticket and wait in line for your turn;
  • you make an online appointment to reach the counter on a certain day and at a certain time, within the limit of available slots. The online appointment is made by following the steps detailed on this page (How to make an online appointment at DRPCIV (DGPCI)).

After registering the file, from that very moment, you can go anytime, on any day when the examination hall is open, to take the theoretical exam (the hall).

We recommend that before leaving for the headquarters of the SPCRPCIV institution in your county you access their website to find out information about the days and hours when the counters for file registration for examination are open and the schedule of the examination hall. For example, for Cluj County you must reach the website of the Cluj County Prefect Institution in the section “Driving licence and vehicle registration service - schedule”.

If you were rejected at the theoretical exam (the hall) you can take a new theoretical exam at the earliest on the 16th calendar day from taking the previous exam that you failed. In this case, considering that you have already registered the file for examination in the past, you will present yourself directly at the examination hall to take the theoretical exam again, without going to the counter for file registration.

After passing the theoretical exam (the hall) you can schedule yourself for the practical exam (the route) using one of the following methods:

  • through the computer platform that displays the available slots. It appears on the computer screen after passing the theoretical exam;
  • through the driving school where you completed the training courses;
  • at the SPCRPCIV counters in your county, with the support of the workers at the service counters, either based on a queue ticket or based on an online appointment to reach the counter.

The theoretical and practical exams for obtaining the driving licence can be taken within one year from the date of graduation from the driving school. The date you graduated from the driving school is found written on the training sheet (the graduation certificate) in your file.

The candidate must keep in mind the following:

  • the documents in the file must be valid on the date of file registration (criminal record, medical sheet, identity document, temporary residence visa) as well as on the date of taking the theoretical and practical tests;
  • in the case of adding categories, the driving licence must be valid on the date of taking the tests;
  • the presentation at the exam with computer communication devices (mobile phones, video cameras, earphones) is prohibited.
